Product Details:

An exquisite handcrafted Japanese mame bonsai pot (豆鉢) by the respected Tokoname potter Shinzan (信山)..
This small masterpiece reflects the quiet discipline and aesthetic purity of Tokoname-yaki (常滑焼) — one of Japan’s oldest and most celebrated ceramic traditions.

The pot features a beautifully textured iron-sand glaze (鉄砂釉, tetsusa yū) that transitions seamlessly from deep brown to muted olive-green, enriched with natural mineral speckling. The glaze surface displays a subtle patina (錆, sabi), formed over years of use, revealing the pot’s history and authenticity.

Its form (形, katachi) — a shallow, soft round bowl (丸鉢, marubachi) — possesses a rolled lip and delicately incised feet, providing both stability and visual refinement. The clay body is coarse and groggy, enhancing the organic feel that defines Shinzan’s aesthetic.
On the base, the impressed Shinzan seal (信山印) is clearly visible, an authentic mark of his kiln. The pot is fully functional, with a central drainage hole (排水穴, haisui ana) and two wiring holes (針金穴, harigane ana) for proper bonsai anchoring.

Dimensions (外寸):

10.6 cm × 4.4 cm (high)Mame size (豆鉢) classification

Condition (状態):

Excellent (非常に良い) — No cracks, chips, or repairs. The surface exhibits refined aging (経年変化, keinen-henka) and glaze depth, characteristic of authentic vintage Tokoname ware.

A refined Shinzan mame bonsai pot (信山豆鉢) — compact yet rich in presence.
The interplay between its earthy iron-sand glaze and simple bowl form embodies wabi-sabi (侘寂) — the quiet beauty of imperfection and time.
This piece harmonizes strength and subtlety, ideal for mame or shohin bonsai (豆盆栽・小品盆栽) such as black pine (kuromatsu, 黒松), juniper (shinpaku, 真柏), or accent plants (kusamono, 草物).

It captures the spirit of Tokoname ceramics — balance (調和, chōwa), humility (謙虚, kenkyō), and craftsmanship (職人技, shokunin-waza) — distilled into a work of miniature perfection.

Collector’s Note (コレクターズノート):

Highly sought after among mame and shohin collectors, Shinzan’s works are praised for their tactile glaze, balance of form, and the emotional warmth they bring to small-scale bonsai displays.
This particular piece — with its deep iron-sand glaze and elegantly proportioned silhouette — exemplifies the artistry that has made Shinzan one of the most collectible contemporary Tokoname potters.
A museum-quality example of fine Japanese mame pottery, ready to grace any high-level bonsai collection or exhibition display.
