Description:
A fine vintage Japanese bonsai pot by the Yamaaki kiln 山秋窯 of Tokoname 常滑, made by 2nd Generation Kataoka Sadamitsu 片岡貞光, known by the artist name Koshosen / Koshousen 小松泉. This is a well-balanced oval form 楕円鉢, made in an attractive pear-skin unglazed clay 梨皮泥, with a warm brown-grey tone and naturally textured groggy surface.
The pot has a strong but elegant profile, with gently rounded walls, a rolled upper lip 口縁, and a clean lower basal band 腰帯 that gives the piece a stable and refined appearance. The subtle banding around the rim and foot line creates a powerful sense of balance, while the softly curved oval body gives the pot a calm, mature character suitable for high-quality bonsai display.
The clay surface shows excellent texture, with fine speckling and mineral inclusions throughout the body. Over time, the pot has developed a beautiful aged patina 時代感, giving the surface depth and character while preserving the quiet strength of Tokoname unglazed ware 常滑無釉鉢. The finish has a natural sheen in places, especially around the rim and body, showing decades of careful use and handling.
The underside is neatly finished with four raised feet 足, each integrated into the oval form. The base includes multiple drainage holes 水抜き穴 and wiring holes 針金穴, making the pot practical for bonsai cultivation as well as display. The base carries the Yamaaki kiln mark 山秋印 together with the Koshosen / Koshousen artist seal 小松泉印, confirming its attribution to 2nd Generation Kataoka Sadamitsu.
A beautifully made Tokoname bonsai pot with excellent proportions, strong clay character, and a highly desirable aged surface. Its restrained oval form, pear-skin clay texture, and signed Yamaaki / Koshosen marks make it a very attractive piece for collectors and for refined bonsai presentation.
