YAMAAKI 白釉長方鉢 | Tokoname Ware | 37.3cm Rectangular White-Glazed Bonsai Pot

Product Details:

Region: Tokoname 常滑市 (Aichi Prefecture, Japan)

Kiln: Yamaaki Kiln 山秋窯

Artist: 3rd Generation – Kataoka Toshio (三代目 片岡俊夫)

This elegant bonsai pot is a classic example of Tokoname ware, featuring a refined white glaze (白釉 haku-yū) over a rectangular form. The design includes a gently flared outer rim, recessed side panels on all four faces, and gracefully stepped feet. The surface showcases a subtle crackle pattern (貫入 kannyū), adding character and depth to the piece.

As the Yamaaki Kiln ceased production in the early 2000s, works by the third-generation potter Kataoka Toshio are becoming increasingly rare and highly collectible. This piece embodies not only practical functionality but also historical and artistic significance — an ideal choice for serious bonsai enthusiasts and collectors alike.

Signed by hand with a nail mark (爪書き tsumegaki) next to the Yamaaki seal.

External Dimensions: 37.3 x 30.0 x 9.8 cm

Condition: Excellent – Please note: There is a very small chip (23mm) on one of the feet. It does not affect the structural integrity or display value of the pot.

Yamaaki, 3rd Generation Potter Kataoaka Toshio. The kiln was started by Kataoka Akitsuga and fired by three generations of potters, until it finally went 'cold' in 2011. It was the most productive bonsai pot kiln in Tokoname, fired with gas, which gives those fantastic clay colours mimicking the pots of ancient China. There are a lot of production Yamaaki pots available; those with nail-carved signatures were hand-made by the Kataoka family, and consequently, are more valuable.
